Brown University believes that it is important that students have
access to comprehensive medical care while enrolled at Brown. Therefore, full time students newly enrolled for the Spring semester are automatically enrolled in the University's Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) for coverage effective January 15, 2015. Part time students may elect to be insured by contacting the Insurance Office prior to January 15th. Full time students will be charged the Spring premium of $2 on their Student Account through the Bursar's Office. This fee is assessed in full on the 1st semester bill. For students receiving need based financial aid from Brown, please contact the Office of Financial Aid to explore what options are available to you to cover this charge.
Participation in SHIP is mandatory. However, students may waive enrollment in SHIP if they are covered by a health insurance plan that provides coverage for the essential health insurance benefits listed on the Coverage Comparison sheet and that does not include a high dollar deductible that would prevent the student from being able to afford needed health care. If you are comparing the Brown student health insurance plan to plans available through the Health Insurance Exchanges, Brown's plan would be most similar to the Platinum level plan.
In order to waive out of the University's student health insurance plan, you must confirm that your plan provides adequate coverage.
Use the Coverage Comparison Sheet to compare your plan.
Important coverage considerations:
If you are covered by an HMO, or a plan that has a limited network of acceptable providers in Rhode Island, you may not have coverage for lab tests, x-rays or prescriptions ordered by University Health Services, or the ability to have coverage if seen by a local provider if you are referred outside of University Health Services for care. Many plans will not pay outside of your home area unless it falls under their definition of an emergency, which may result in you paying for expensive tests or services in full.
Students must complete an online waiver form at www.university healthplans.com by the deadline of January 1, 2016.
Please note that a waiver form must be submitted EACH academic year if you do not want to participate in the University's Student Health Insurance Plan.
The Insurance Office is pleased to continue our partnership with University Health Plans and Student Health Insurance Plan.
When using the Brown University Student Health Insurance Plan, please be aware of the following:
There is a $300 deductible, however it is waived for Emergency Room visits, diagnostic X-Rays and Laboratory Tests when ordered by Health Services, outpatient mental health visits, physician office visits, in-network preventative screening/lab, outpatient prescription drugs, and other outpatient services when provided by University Health Services.
There is a $100 payment for inpatient hospitalization or outpatient surgery performed at a hospital or hospital affiliated surgical center. This is in addition to the $300 deductible.
In addition to the providers on the Cigna and First Health Network lists, you may also visit East Side Vision Care and University Orthopedics.
Emergency Room visits have a $100 copay, while Urgent Care Center visits have a $25 copay.
Finally,we all know that "health is wealth" so we all people should be concerned about this matter and should take care of our health properly.Government also should launch different effective program and should focus to minimize harmful disease that are existing in world.
